| Added Money |
Money added to the purse of a race either by the racing association, a breeding or other fund, or by the amount paid by owners in nomination, eligibility, entry, and starting fees.

All Thoroughbreds are deemed a year older on January 1st of every year.

| Agent |
An individual authorized to 1) transact business for a stable owner, trainer, jockey, etc.; or 2) to sell or buy horses on behalf of another.

| Allowance Race |
A race, other than claiming or stakes, for which entry is limited to those horses that satisfy specific conditions established by the racing secretary.

| Also-Eligible |
A horse officially entered for a race, but not permitted to start unless the field is reduced in size by a scratch to below a specified number, usually that number considered safe to compete.

| Also Ran |
A horse who finishes out of the money.

| Anhydrosis |
The inability to sweat in response to work output or increases in body temperature, a "non-sweater."

| Apprentice |
A new jockey or one who has not ridden a specified number of winners within an established period of time. Also known as a "bug," referring to the asterisk following the jockey’s name or weight.

| Apprentice Allowance |
A weight concession given to an apprentice rider. Usually the allowance is five pounds.
